Every spring, the Board of Directors for PBACDL has chosen one person from our community for their commitment to justice in criminal law for PBACDL to honor at a reception. While our past honorees have always been judges, last year we renamed the award after local county court judge, Barry M. Cohen. We then expanded our candidate pool to include anyone who exhibits "courage and integrity in seeking justice and fairness in criminal law." This year, our Judicial Relations Committee took nominations from our membership, which were then reviewed by the committee, narrowed down, and submitted to the Board of Directors for a final vote.
L.D. "Donnie" Murrell has been chosen as the recipient of this year's award. Donnie has been a criminal defense lawyer for more than 25 years and has been board certified since 1998. He is highly regarded by both lawyers and judges, and is known for performing the most thorough investigation and case preparation. Donnie was the first PBACDL President and is a past president of FACDL. He has been a driving force in both organizations since their inception. He has been the FACDL Strike Force Committee for many years and has assisted lawyers around the state when judges have unjustifiably threatened their liberty.
This year, PBACDL will show Donnie what he has meant, and continues to mean, to us by honoring him with the First Annual Barry M. Cohen Champion of Justice Award.
